First, this doesn’t refer to ALL Cardinals fans. I know some Card fans who are as loyal and as knowledgable of the game as are the vast majority of Cubs fans.

But most Card fans spend bad mouth their team as much as they praise them. I was in a certain Cardinals-centric bar a few weeks ago — back when it looked like they were going to choke their way out of the playoffs — and you should have heard the language they were using against their own team.

Disgraceful.

Last night, I was able to catch the top of the 8th inning. A fellow employee came into the lounge just as the Tigers had made their first out. “Woo Hoo! Just two more out and the Cardinals win.”

“Um, no. This the top of the 8th. There’s still the 9th.”

“But the Cardinals won’t have to come to bat if Detroit doesn’t score.”

U’m, NO, Mr. Cardinals fan. Both teams bat in every inning, except the bottom of the ninth. The Tigers still come to bat in the top of the 9th.”

“Oh, yeah. Thats’s right. Woo Hoo!”

Yep. They come out of the woodwork after a successful season. But they are still the second favorite team in Peoria. You will occasionally see Cardinals fans climb onto the White Sox or Cubs bandwagons. You will never, ever see Cubs fans do that. It just doesn’t happen.

And speaking of Cardinals fans, I actually heard “baseball fans” at the new Busch Stadium chanting “Dee-fence! Dee-fence!” last night. You know, what they chant at FOOTBALL games.

You see, there are Cardinals fans who get baseball and football confused, and some who never quite picked up on the fact that the football meam moved to Arizona.

I am 43 years old. I’m at the age where I have to stop and do the math before I tell anyone exactly how old I am. I recently spend about a month thinking I was 44 because I didn’t stop and count.

That’s not old, really. And not that age gives one wisdom anyway, but it’s old enough for me to have noticed a few things. Not a lot, but a few.

I’ve seen people at the best — housewives who walk into a neighbor’s buring home to rescue kids, ordinary peoeple who work all year round to make sure every child has a toy on Christmas. I’ve seen people at their absolute worse, and the less said about these people, the better. Mostly I see people just getting by, doing the best they can.

I’ve seen and heard things that give me some important life lessons. I seen things that make no sense at all.

But there is just one universal truth. No matter what I see or hear, no matter what evidence is presented to the contrary, I know this is true. This includes the horrors that have been televised in recent weeks. I advise anyone I meet that in the name of whatever God they worship, that they cannot go wrong EVER by believing and acting as the following statement is a true:

“The Cardinals Suck. Always have. Always will.”

“Get a Brain, Morans,” indeed.

Note to Cardinals fans: The joke here is that it’s spelled M-O-R-O-N-S. Get it now?
