A certain Peoria blogger — who shall remain nameless — likes to talk about his two favorite high school football teams. Well, now that Richwoods has clinched a share of the Mid-State 6 Conference championship, he’s talking up the Knights, forgetting all about his new-found loyalty to the Pekin Dragons. He’s even talking smack about Friday’s Richwoods/Woodruff matchup.

PUH-lease. People who’ve seen both Richwoods AND Woodruff play in person give the Warriors the edge in the matchup. The Warriors have all the tools this year and anyone who thinks a Richwoods victory is a forgone conclusion (as does the JS apparently, considering the the loving attention they heap on the Knights) just isn’t paying attention to the revolution going on in the 1800 block of Northeast Perry.

And I have never, ever, ever been of divided loyalties regarding which high school I root for.

Eat ‘em up, Warriors! Northside pride!

  1. I thought you weren’t going to talk smack, Bill??? Jeesh, you had me feeling guilty with your post to my blog. NEVERMIND now!

My smack talking has been pretty limited up to now – pointing out that the game this Friday is for Peoria bragging rights (simply a statement of fact) and asking if the Warriors are ready. I will now observe the FACT that for AGES the Warriors have been a yearly ritual sacrifice to the Knights. Richwoods would have had more competition from their JFL squad. It will be nice to actually have a little bit of a contest this year.

Since 1983, the Knights have missed entering the playoffs only 4 times and have two state championships and one state runner-up. The Warriors have had 3 playoff appearances TOTAL – 1978, 1986 and 1987 – and never got past the 2nd round even then. Which team was the Knight’s big competition for most of those years? Woodruff? (Laughing hysterically). Hardly – it was most often PEKIN. Bill, you can start bragging when your team develops a 20 year Midstate dynasty.

Regarding my “divided loyalties” – the only time that would become a problem is if Richwoods played Pekin. Now that they’re in separate conferences, that won’t be as frequent an occurrence. In some ways that’s unfortunate – Pekin vs. Richwoods was a great football rivalry.

I also have good reason for my divided loyalties – my daughters are in the Pekin school system and Pekin is my current home, while I grew up in District 150 and went to Richwoods. When they’re not playing each other, I can cheer for both. When they are, I can hope for a good game and enjoy the competition. If my daughters join competitive sports teams, I will certainly always cheer for them.

I hope it’s a good game on Friday. My wife & I are planning on going.
